Tesla confirms Model S price hike

By Cornelius Nunev

Tesla claims that it will be raising the cost of the next Model S, verifying rumors in the automotive press. However, the automaker is not yet ready to publicize a final price tag. Tesla may also be telling purchasers to pay additional for features that are currently standard on the model S.

Tesla S cost

Maxim Group analyst Aaron Chew wrote last week that "recent Tesla commentary suggests an increase in the Model S price for new bookings is on the horizon."

The next Model S will be more costly, according to Tesla, but the price increase will not be paid as long as buyers put down a $5,000 deposit. Only people who want the new vehicles and are ordering will pay the high price tag. As the Motor Trend 2013 Car of the Year, it is fair that the Model S is going to be more costly.

You can get the $5,000 deposit back until specs are chosen later.

Tesla got 13,000 reservations for the Model S too, according to Chew.

If you need additional choices and the enormous 85-kWh battery on the Model S in the deluxe model, you can pay over $105,000 for it. The base model sells for about $57,400 with the 40-kWh pack.

A few different choices

Be prepared to get even more cash from auto loan lenders for the car. Tesla announced that it will be changing what attributes come standard and what is optional in the Model S. People will pay more cash for the base model with less stuff in it. This is just one extra way Tesla will be making more money off the car.

Announcement for a reason

It is anticipated that the price hike is here because Tesla feels like it has to do it now or never correct now. It is still unknown why the hike happened for sure, but Tesla did have a goal of selling 20,000 electric sedans at first. It seems like this would not help.

MotorTrend points out that this could have something to do with the belief that demand is higher than envisioned. It should not hurt sales much to increase costs by a few thousand.

Whatever the reason, Chew sees it as a chance for investors.

"While bulls and bears both could be emboldened by the news," he said, "we believe the uncertainty is more likely to pressure the stock trading at the high end of a defined range. ... We view any dip as an opportunity [to buy]."

The Model S cost will be released soon, according to Tesla.
