Interior Design - Not Just For The Rich

By Sasha Peters

I think that it's a common misconception that you have to be wealthy or have a Master's degree to appreciate or even think much about interior design. Maybe you look at magazines or think of all the complexities of interior design that experts talk about. You fear that your tastes or your thoughts on interior design might be laughed at by anyone who supposedly knows something about interior design.

Stand up and be bold! What you like and what is pleasing to you is every bit as important and valid as what you might see in some of the most prestigious magazines and online resources. What is most important is that your surroundings are appealing to you and if what lies within your four walls brings you pleasure then there's a very good chance that it will bring someone else pleasure also. You are an interior designer by default and without even knowing it.

Maybe you're like my wife, who has a talent and an eye for design and can do amazing things with almost nothing at all. When we were first married, spending a lot of money on home furnishings was out of the question. We took what was given to us and she made our house into a delighful home that many of our friends were amazed with. It's a gift and she had the simple desire to make our horrible little apartment a more pleasant place for us to spend our time.

My wife would take two dollars worth of Christmas lights, some pine branches that she found laying in the yard and create something that looked like it came out of a magazine. She would take old milk crates throw an old blanket over them, light a few candles and place a couple of pictures on the whole thing and you would have thought that Martha Stewart had stopped by.

You don't have to have a huge bankroll to create an appealing design in your home. Everything doesn't have to be new and while recycling is all the rage these days, old things can be made new with a little spit and polish. Antiques, after all, are nothing but old things that people wax nostalgic over, right? While you women do tend to have a bit more talent when it comes to this kind of creativity, us guys can gather and hunt down the materials that you require and, of course, appreciate the finished product since it's always nice to come home to a space that is as beautiful as you are.

Now, there's nothing wrong with money or having the resources to create the design that you dream of. Don't get me wrong! Having the ability to hire a cutting edge designer to help with your project or the ability to buy the furniture and furnishing that you dream about just makes the job a little easier and often even more pleasant than what you might be able to piece together. The point is that what you feel is pleasant is your opinion and you are only limited by your ingenuity and imagination. Sometimes the most astounding interior designs come to life when we just allow ourselves to dream a little.
