Savvy Tips for Making Your Home More Secure

By Mark Mahaffey

There are many things you can do to make your home more secure and decrease the chances that you will be a victim of home invasion. One thing you can do is to get training in how to use a gun correctly. Granted, using a gun should be a last resort. But if you are in danger for your life and someone is attacking you, you may need to have a gun to use.

Putting bars on your window is another good way of making your home safer, especially if you live in an area that sees high crime. You can choose from different configurations and if you want to paint them, you can make them match the color of your house.

Steel doors and kick plates are also a wise choice. If a burglar tries to kick down your door, you can make his job much harder by installing steel doors in your home. But also make sure that you have very strong and adequate door frames. If you have weak door frames, even a strong door cannot keep away someone who is kicking in your door!

You may also want to consider having a taser on hand. Like guns, these should be used as a last resort. But when your life is in danger, you need to have plenty of options for keeping yourself safe. A taser will hopefully cause the attacker such pain that he will be forced to leave you alone and you can escape. Call the police as soon as possible so that they can catch him before he fully recovers.

You might also consider buying some cans of pepper spray. You can put these in many different places, so that you will always have them on hand in case of an emergency. If you have to use one, try to spray it on the face, eyes and head of your intruder. This will probably make him blind for a few minutes, which will make it easier for you to get away.

And do not forget the benefit of having a home alarm system in your house. Criminals will often refuse to break into a home that has a security system, so consider purchasing one if you do not already have one. Just be sure to post signs in your yard so that thieves will know you have one.
