How good are Kaplan MCAT instructors? Find the answer here!

By Mike Frazier, M.d.

When it comes to choosing who will teach you how to score better on the MCAT, it's a very serious matter. You do not want to be spending your hard earned cash to go and see a teacher who will not help you get a better score on the MCAT. Period. So, who exactly will be teaching you if you do choose Kaplan MCAT for your MCAT prep?

Teachers

When evaluating Kaplan MCAT or any other MCAT prep course, you must ensure that your teacher is more than just intelligent. They have to be able to communicate that intelligence to you! The "professors" at Kaplan MCAT prep were superstars in one of the MCAT areas. If you scored a 13 on biological sciences this year, you could be teaching a course in biological sciences next year! I know some people who went to UCLA medical school who were instructors for Kaplan MCAT prep courses.

These teachers are screened to make sure that they are able to relate to students. I went through this process for a similar company. Usually you have to make the cut on the resume (solid performance on your own MCAT), then you have an in-person or Skype interview where you teach something to your interviewer. Only people who show they are smart and can teach get the job.

Just so we're clear, you are getting a student, not a professional teacher, as your Kaplan MCAT instructor. It's not someone with a PhD in physics teaching you MCAT physics. You'll get a top of the line student who is also a top of the line teacher.

The Kaplan MCAT Layout

For any of the Kaplan MCAT courses, you'll start with an initial test to establish your baseline. This is important for their "higher score guarantee," which I cover on my web page (link below). It's also just smart to get a baseline with a practice test, even if you don't go with Kaplan MCAT for your prep. Kaplan MCAT prep also has the advantage of their Smart Reports, which we'll also cover later, but basically you'll get a personalized map of where you are strong and where you are weak so you can tailor your studying. This can end up saving you a lot of time by making your preparation much more efficient.

You'll then attend 24 classes with your teacher over about a semester, going over a prescribed curriculum so that you cover each MCAT subject in depth. You'll have a different instructor for each section, so if you don't like one of your teachers, just wait for the next class!

Closing Remarks

Kaplan MCAT prep teachers are definitely not on the same level as Dr. Jones who teaches your general chemistry class as far as knowledge of the material. However, they are students who have proved themselves knowledgeable in their subject and shown that they have solid teaching skills.

Thanks for the information. Well, I'm looking for effective high school chem/high school chemistry tutoring. Where could I possibly find them?
