Different Types Of Replacement Couch Cushions

By Paula Currie

You will probably find replacement couch cushions in most stores that sell furniture. If not, you can try in upholstery stores, or, of course, online. Another option is to find a good service that will replace your old cushions with new ones. If you would rather replace the foam or filling yourself, different types of fillers are available in most sewing and upholstery supply stores.

Finding appropriate filling isn't hard. Which one you should choose depends on the purpose. Of course, different qualities have different prices. Four basic filler types are available in most stores, and some are more expensive, but have better characteristics. If your expensive couch needs a makeover, you would probably choose the best material you can find.

The most common filler you will probably find in any specialized store is the sheet foam. You can choose lower or higher density, and different materials react differently when compressed. Although it can be cut to different sizes and shapes, this material is usually wrapped into a soft terylene. This way your cushion will have a softer shape and become more comfortable.

If you need to replace the back cushion, you may use a polyester fiber only. This type of filling is called loose fiberfill. It is much cheaper solution, but it has its disadvantages. It flattens very quickly, and it is not suitable for seat cushion filling, at least not if used alone. It can work very well if you use it in combination with other materials. The good thing is that it is perfectly mildew resistant.

Loose fiberfill can be used with foam inner core. Everything needs to be encased in a thick fabric shell first, and than refill your cushion with it. This way you will have good durability, mildew resistance and lowered expenses all at once. Another good thing is that you can replace the loose filling in time, keeping the inner core.

Natural down is the most expensive choice, but nothing feels so comfortable. Long durability and appropriate softness and density make this material very good solution for renewing classic, expensive couches. It is not hypoallergenic, thou, and you have to keep it in mind. More affordable solution is to combine it with inner foam core, to cut the expenses and to make the maintenance easier.

Most manufacturers offer at least ten densities to choose from. Foams can be cut to different shapes, including cylinders, triangles, squares and bolsters. Thinner, softer foams are cheaper, but they won't last very long. Thicker foams with better density may last for years, and you can combine them with loose filling to improve the softness, or with natural down.

In any case, your favorite old couch don't have to be replaced with a new one. If the problem is its appearance, it may be easily solved with replacement couch cushions. Foams, loose fillings and natural down are available in all specialized stores, but often in regular furniture selling stores as well. You will find some very good deals online, if you spend some time searching for the best solution.
