What To Look For When Buying Welding Machines And Welding Consumables

By Cameron Hart

For most people, including welding beginners, it is really hard to figure out which welding machines and welding consumables they would be best of buying, as there are so many different types to choose from. Find the right equipment to be used for specific projects is absolutely crucial.

For a novice in welding, in most cases the welding machines that are most likely to be the best choice as a first machine are stick welders or wire feed welders. These are the easiest types of machine to use for an individual with limited experience in welding. Wire feed welders are in most cases the easiest type of machine to use, as welding wire is fed continuously into your welding gun as you work. As wire feeding welding machines are the easiest to operate, they also help novices to produce better, neater welds.

The main determining factor in buying welding machines is to find out whether they are the right type of machine for the type of welding that they will be needed for. Different welding techniques need different welding machines that have a range of features. Most novices in welding use arc welding techniques such as Gas Metal Arc Welding which is known as MIG Welding and also flux cored wire welding.

Most beginners make the choice to purchase MIG welding machines as they can weld a wide variety of materials as opposed to other machines that are far more limited. Due to the versatility of a MIG welding machine, it is best for smaller repair and maintenance jobs that require less welding skill. MIG welding machines are not easily transported as they require a container of shielding gas, so are ideally kept in one place, such as a garage or workshop. MIG welders also cannot be used outside; flux cored wire welding machines are better suited to this.

In addition to buying a welding machine, it is also absolutely essential to purchase all of the necessary safety equipment including safety gloves, safety goggles and even a safety hat. Welding is an extremely hazardous occupation, so it is important for the welder to utilise as many pieces of safety equipment as possible. They will be exposed to bright lights, toxic fumes and high temperatures, plus even the risk of electric shock.
