Inspecting A Used Car Before Buying It

By Darelle Moore

Checking on a particular secondhand auto in person and taking it out for a test drive is one of the most vital tasks to undertake when purchasing a used car. It is only common sense to make sure that you research as much as you can about the used vehicle that you are thinking of purchasing since you are going to spend anywhere between five to fifteen thousand dollars just to own it. And for those who are first time used auto buyers, it is imperative that they seriously take a look at the vehicle they are interested in to reduce the possibility of ending up with a lemon car that will cost them even more in the coming months.

So how do you go about inspecting this used vehicle being offered you? To start with, you have conduct your inspection during the daytime to ensure there is sufficient light to see everything that is vital. Artificial lights cast shadows, concealing scratches and imperfections on the body of the car.

Take a look at how the car is parked, ensuring that it is on level ground, so you can easily see if there is the vehicle's body is sagging in any way; if you are buying from a private seller, ask them to take the car out of the garage so you can inspect it. You must also try to find out if there is an even wear on the tires; signs of uneven wear would indicate that there is a problem with the suspension of the car.

It would also help to check out online sites so that you can get an idea on what else to look out for in these used cars that you are planning to buy. You can also bring your own mechanic to help you do the inspection and test drive so you would have a professional's opinion on how well the car performs. It is also good practice to test drive the car on a cool engine as a cool engine can give more information on the car than a warm engine could.

Take a look at various used car values and prices even before you go and check the used auto. You may want to check out various sites to provide you with a good idea as to the prices of the kinds of cars that you are expecting to buy. This is to make sure that the sellers are not trying to overprice the car.

This is particularly helpful if you are going to buy the car from its owner because owners tend to overprice their cars out of some emotional attachment they had formed with the car. You can also set a reasonable offer for the car when you know exactly how much the vehicle would be worth in the market today. But it is important that you keep the amount you are offering within a reasonable range. In this manner you will not irritate the sellers so that they would be more likely to agree to your price.
