Many people wish to be electrical contractors. For one to become an electrical contractor it will be hard work and not for the lazy. You will need to have a drive and a good understanding of how everything works. It can take a few years of training but in the end it will be well worth all those long study hours.
There are three different types of contractors. The first one is a "line contractor". He works with distribution lines and well as high voltage power. Their main job is to maintain the system that transports the electricity as well as building the same system. This power is generated at a power plant before being distributed to homes and businesses.
All electricians are trained under four different categories. These are the general electrician, construction, engineering and mining. The first specializes in the wiring of buildings as well as different machines that do not move. They are there to maintain and repair existing infrastructure.
A linesman can also install TV cables as well as telephones. They will spend most of the day outdoors, either in the sun or in the cold. They are always working with live power lines so for their protection when doing this they have to be above ground. They are issued special conductive clothing as they will need to be connected to the live power line. If they happen to handle both ends of a broken conductor line, there is a good chance of getting electrocuted.
Working overtime could be a disadvantage for this specific job. The places he will be required to work in will be dirty, dusty and very noisy. If one is claustrophobic, this is not the job for you. It will require a lot of problem solving as well as having to work with ones hands all the time. The engineering electrician will deal with the study of electricity, electronics as well as electromagnetism. He will need to have done electrical and electronic engineering and have obtained a degree in both. To be able to design electronic circuits as well as digital will be a necessity.
To be qualified to attend a college that offers electrical, one will need to have good eyesight and not be colorblind. You must be able to communicate clearly and have good eye hand co-ordination. This will be an asset as you will be working with tools day in and day out. One will need to have a certificate stating that you have passed mathematics and physical science. There are multiple levels that will need to be written. In order to get three national certificates during the year, registration dates are in January, April and again in August.
The Electrical Contractors Association is registered in terms of the Labor Act. This is purely a non-profit organization. It is only there to serve and to generate funds to keep it going. This membership has close to 3000 contractors and distributors of equipment and components. There are over 50 % of employers and they in turn employ over 70% of the industries workers.
Each country will produce different amounts of electricity annually. Most is used up by normal households. Always consult a contractor when dealing with electricity as it can be very dangerous if you do now know what you are doing.
