Prevent Holdups in Your Business with these Ideas

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are aware of the news, you know that there is much crime in our world and in our country. From home burglaries to shoplifting in stores to robberies in banks, it is impossible to escape the danger of potentially being a victim of crime in one form or another. And if you own your own business, you are certainly aware of the possibility of having your business vandalized.

The good news is you have many options when it comes to taking action and minimizing the odds that your business will be the victim of crime. To begin with, start making it a habit to pay careful attention to the people who are in your business. Do they look nervous? Are they just loitering or are they actually shopping? If they look like they are up to no good, call the police.

Emergency panic buttons are a good precaution against crime. These buttons can be installed in easy to reach places. When they are pressed, the authorities are notified that there is an emergency in your business and help can be sent quickly. A good place to put these buttons is behind the counter so that the cashiers can push them without the robber noticing.

The windows and doors of your business should be kept clear of large objects that would block people from having a good view of what is going on inside your business. If a theft occurs, people passing by may be able to look in and see what is happening and call for help if necessary.

If you keep a lot of money in your store, you are putting yourself at risk of being robbed. The more money you have on hand, the more a robber can steal if he tries to. It is better to have an armored car come and make pickups at various times during the day, so that there is never a large amount of cash on hand in the store.

Your employees also need to be checked out thoroughly. You do not want to hire someone who has a proven record of crime, because they may end up stealing from you! A simple background check will give you the information that you need to decide whether you want to hire them or not.
