One of the favorite stories parents used to tell their children was about a famous lumberjack named Paul Bunyan. Of course, Paul had a big blue ox named Babe. This tale was so famous that it inspired people to design restaurants in the Pacific Northwest.
Paul being 20 feet tall made him so good at felling trees. You can imagine with a splitting of that giant acts that felling a tree was fairly easy. It is plain to see that in these times there are no giants felling trees and making waterholes for their animals.
Felling trees requires that you master the art and technicality of it. The whole thing is not simple grabbing the axe and heading to the forest kind of thing. One cannot fell a fir with a simple axe. You're going to be there for a long time and you're not going to be very effective at bringing down that tree. How do you go about chopping a tree?
You need to know that trees are dangerous when you are doing something more than sight seeing them. Varying with the size, many trees are wet and slippery the reason behind loggers wearing special boots.
Many trees that you might want to fell are big and weight a lot. As they come down, they can cause great damage if they are not brought down in the right way.
Wear the correct gear. A helmet is necessary. Your day can be ruined with a tree limb falling from 30 or 40 feet high.
Make sure you have the proper axe. You want a chopping axe, and not a splitting axe. If you don't know the difference find out.
Decide on the direction where you want the tree to fall ensuring that it does not fall on people or property.
Start by creating a wedge on the side that you want the tree to fall. You want to wedge out small pieces, until you get a nice vee cut on that side of the tree. Afterwards, you should get to the other side of the tree cutting out another vee above the other vee. Continue chopping out pieces while watching the tree. Though you want it to fall in the direction of the cut, most of the time this is not the case. If it starts leaning towards you, make sure to get out of the way. This is simply to say that you move off the tree stump once the tree starts falling. As the tree falls, sometimes it might kick up on the end causing you injury while it does so.
While your chopping the tree listen for a groaning sound. That means the tree is starting to give way and weaken. Just as the tree is falling, steer clear of the stump until it comes completely down.
