Even though there are many legitimate businesses out there, there are also many which are crooked. It is one of the things that consumers want to avoid: being taken in by a business that is fraudulent. Nonetheless, many consumers get scammed by crooks who pretend to be representing a legitimate business, when in fact they are out to steal the money of their innocent victims.

Scammers can enter any industry, including the industry of home security. And criminals within this industry may be one of the most dangerous to accidentally get involved with. For while any business that is filled with crooks is bad, if you find yourself the victim of a home security company scam, you are particularly vulnerable. This is because you have probably given them access to your home!

However, you will be happy to hear that the Federal Trade Commission can help you with some tips that offer protection against finding yourself the unfortunate victim of a home security company scam. If you have a person offer to sell you a security system, using the tips from the government will decrease the chances that you find yourself ripped off by criminals.

The Federal Trade Commission thinks that one of the first steps you should take when confronted with someone offering to sell you a home security system is to make sure they have identification that proves they are who they say they are. You should not let them into your house until you have call the company they are representing and make sure they are truly employed by them.

Something else to notices is how hard they are selling to you. Maybe they are so pushy that they make you nervous. Or they try to get you to buy by telling you than unless you act now, this deal with never come back. Some may even try to get your business by using scare techniques, such as recounting recent crime in your neighborhood. Each of these things can be signs of a scam.

Finally, be aware that these scammers may try to sell you an fake upgrade to your current home alarm system. Or they may tell you that your monitoring company has gone out of business. Call your company to check on these claims before giving the person your money.
