Native plants naturally occur in one particular area, without human assistance. Native plants in North Carolina are well adapted to all physical and biological conditions there, such as soil, climate, insects and the company of other plants surrounding them. All those make them an ideal choice for every gardener. You can grow them easily, and contribute to your community at the same time.

Maintaining native plants is much easier, thanks to their climate and insect resistance. Besides, those plants are quite important to area wildlife as well, because they provide their food and natural shelter. When you decide to grow native plants, you contribute to your community by taking care of your natural heritage, and you also protect your environment.

North Carolina consists of four different climate regions, and they all support different plants. Mountains, for example, support mainly evergreens, thanks to their climate conditions, acidic soil and heights. Pines and hickories are perfectly happy there. Maple and hemlock rather live on moist slopes. Various flowering trees and wild flowers choose other areas.

There are more than four thousands native species there, and all have their special characteristics and beauty. Some of them are considered rare, maybe 700 of them. 160 species are especially rare or endangered, and, because of them, there are eighteen plant preserves in this state. Maybe the most interesting of all those species living there are incredibly beautiful wildflowers.

Small trees can find their place in almost every garden. The smallest ones will never become high and impressive, but they are still very decorative. For example which-hazel or fringe tree will look very nice if combined with flowering dogwood and maybe some evergreen species such as American holly. Red cedar always look very nice.

Large trees such as red maple and river birch are suitable for larger gardens. Tulip tree is especially attractive, as well as American linden. They enjoy sunny meadows, and bring more than welcome shade to hidden corners of your beautiful garden. Carolina hemlock and Red spruce will also make a nice shade and look very decorative.

Different types of shrubs are always very good solution. Smaller shrubs, for example sweet fern and Carolina rose do look very nice, although they can reach only up to four feet. If you would like to have larger shrubs in your garden, you might consider planting Sweet shrub or maybe Flame azalea. Elderberry is also quite attractive. Large ones such as Silky willow and Rose bay rhododendron are also effective.

Great choice of lovely wildflowers is something this state is especially proud of. Wild Columbine, blue star and Green dragon are maybe some of the most popular ones, including delicate lobelias in variety of colors and other interesting species. Geraniums are especially luxurious and attractive, and you will enjoy having them in your garden.

Small gardens, pergolas, patios and even balconies can be effectively decorated with fast growing vines. Virgin's bower is really very nice, or maybe climbing hydrangea, or a passion flower. 4000 different native plants in North Carolina are the best guarantee you will find something to make your lovely garden even more beautiful.
