Financial Assistance for Single Mothers and Single Pops

By Leila Lee

Single carers are folks who for one reason or another are the single custodians of a kid or youngsters who are the offspring of the marriage. In the 50s and sixties, it was hard for pas to get custody of their youngsters, and a single mother didn't have the same fears as in almost all cases the mummy was given custody.

Here are five facts on single parenting in the States today:

A single pop has identical rights as a single mum to claim paternity and his rights are pretty much the same as a mother's except that they might be tougher to enforce as the ma has a biological connection to the kid. A dad has to sanction paternity before he will be able to exercise his rights completely. If he was married to the child's mummy at the time of conception, he's going to need to demonstrate parenthood through the country's Office of Child Assistance Enforcement (OCSE) which may immediately open the door to his right to request visitation, as well as his right and duty to support the kid.

If the father slips up on support payments and vanishes off the radar, leaving no known address and absconds, a single ma has the right to apply to find him through the Department of Vehicles and state work agencies and can pursue monies owed to her through the state court system.

If a single stay-at-home mom wants to pursue higher education, she can make an application for a Pell grant which doesn't have to be paid back. A Pell grant allows a single mum to work at home, but also look after her children. All she needs is a computer and an internet connection. A grant for a single ma can be up to $5,500, with another $10,000 grant if she qualifies. The object of the Pell grant is to offer deserving single parents a scholarship to enhance her level of education and to secure a job to change her circumstances.

A single ma can acquire a mortgage if she is financially embarrassed, as well as a govt. grant which comes in the form of a no-interest loan of between $5,000 and $20,000 for a down payment. Please remember that there's a difference between a grant and a loan. A grant is free. A loan has to be paid back. This means that you do not have to reimburse the Pell Grant, but must pay back the loan.

Did you know that a single dad has the right to stop third-party adoption? If you were single and your ex-partner was pregnant with a kid you suspect is yours, you can stop the adoption of that child. If the natural pop of the kid does not care and is willingly absent from the child's life and the ma wishes to remarry and carry on with her life, a stepfather could be allowed to file for adoption. There are far more rights today for dads of divorce. They have abundantly proven themselves to be as caring and as nurturing as single mummies.
