By Rabbi Celso Cukierkorn

Converting to a different religion means that one will need to learn the ways and accept the teachings of a new belief. People have different reasons for having the urge to convert to something new like a religion. They can be serious about their relationship and want to cross over to their partner's belief, or a person can seek a new spiritual experience and throw themselves into studying the religion. Whatever the reasons, Jewish conversion has always been a hot topic of discussion, and has interested many people around the world for decades.

Interests can gather from reading, attending a Jewish ceremony, discussing it with family, taking out books or videos and also sometimes hearing lectures. It does not matter what the reasons are for wanting to convert, they all start with exploring Judaism. Sometimes it just starts with something as simple as wondering if converting is the right thing.

Jews have a belief known as Judaism. Millions of people around the world are followers of this religion. The countries that are most known for a lot of Jewish citizens in there population are the United States, the Soviet Union and of course Israel, and these are only some of them.

Jews believe in one God only, which in their religion is called Monotheism. Numerous religions known all over the world today came from Judaism. Natural Jews do not always appreciate the idea of converting, but if the person can prove their loyalty and stay true to the religion, they will consider it.

The key part of Judaism is that God made an agreement which is known to as a covenant. This agreement was with Abraham, who is believed to be the ancestor of this religious community. This agreement indicated that followers will receive love and protection as long as they honor His laws and take responsibility for their actions.

The Messiah is believed to be the anointed one, and he will lead the Jewish people on earth. We do not bother with other religious beliefs; we are set upon following Judaism and are completely independent of other teachings.

Rabbis are spiritual leaders which many of theses religious congregations have, and they are responsible for their congregation's affairs. Judaism also does not have only one central spiritual leader. This religion has its own universities all over the world, which are there to inform, educate and help the rabbis. There are a lot of rules and laws that rabbis need to know and follow.

Some families are faced with situations where one parent is of this religion, while the other one is not. Children of these families are able to undergo a Jewish conversion if the parents so wish. The child will be redeemed a Jew and will then have to follow Judaism as well as partake in various religious activities. Parents who want to convert their children have to follow the rules of their congregation. Some children will undergo a naming ceremony which will have to be performed by a rabbi, while others will need to be circumcised. The process of converting is not easy, and takes a lot of time and dedication, but one completed, one will feel a great sense of accomplishment as well as enlightenment.
