Review Of An Adventure Novel Based In England

By Annabelle Holman

Rosemary Sutcliff was a British novelist who was for known for children books more so historical fiction. She wrote an adventure novel based in England known as The Eagle of the Ninth in the year nineteen fifty four. The following is the book preview of novel.

Ninth Legion from Rome disappeared after they had gone to North Britain to fight Caledonian tribes which had been uprising. A lot of soldiers had lost their lives. The father of Marcus had been one of the leaders of the troop as a commander. Marcus happened to be the leader of the second Legion. He was going to refresh his troops in a nearby fort when his camp was attack by natives. This was a camp that was his base.

Marcus leads his troop to defend his camp against the native tribes. He is wounded badly from that war. He recovers after some days. He saves his soldiers but he is injured and it is certain that he is not in a fit condition that can enable him to resume his duty. This ends his career and ambitions too. His uncle who retired serving takes him to his home.

He lives with the uncle with his leg slowly recovering. He attends Saturnalia Games. He buys a gladiator, Enter Esca after losing in battle. He is to serve him as his personal servant. The two discover that they share similarities. The father of Esca was a commander just as that of Marcus. They form a strengthened relationship.

Rumors emerge that suggest that the Ninth eagle was with other tribes. Marcus granted his slave freedom in a promise that he would be loyal. They left together to pursue the said rumors. They came to a place known as Dun which was under the leadership of Dergian and stayed there for some time. Marcus got a chance to attend ceremony only to see the eagle of their Legion although it had no wings. He knew that the Ninth must have been killed attempting to rescue it. Marcus was able to observe that it was not well guarded. The thought came of stealing. The night of vacating, Esca stole and hid it.

The two leave without difficulties but are caught up by the tribes, midway in their journey. Marcus pretends to be confused and they allow the tribes to search him. They find no eagle and continue in search of it. Esca returns to the place he hid the eagle and recovers it. The two now have to run for their safety.

The two required speed in order to escape the attention of the pursuers. They feared everyone, even those who did not know them. The condition Marcus derailed their speed since he had not yet healed. However they could not dare to stop either. They encountered the pursuers once more. This time they were not many. The two had to hide in a nearby building to seek refuge. At last, they were successful with their journey.

Finally, they make it to the home of Marcus uncle. They forward it to him as they celebrate their victory upon returning it rallies the tribes against them. Unfortunately, the coming back of Eagle of Ninth is not enough to reform it. The achievement of Marcus is somehow diminished.
