Guide To Tennis Court Maintenance

By Debra Cooley

There are several different steps involved in tennis court maintenance. Courts will vary in the materials they are made of. The steps you will need to do will depend on which one you have. They are not all the same and will require different equipment and supplies to maintain them. Not only is it important for you to learn this information to care for the courts, but the games that are played on them also depend on it.

One of the courts is made from a hard material. They are often troublesome to fix if they get damaged, but fairly simple with maintaining. Try to keep it as clean as possible by removing dirt regularly. Reapply the acrylic protective coating as it becomes dull or scratched.

The lines of the wooden courts should also be redone, usually when the acrylic is reapplied. You should ban all type of marking soles that can gouge or scratch the surface. Additionally, all equipment and supplies should be removed from the surface when you are finished using them because they can result in an uneven surface from the added weight.

Clay courts are also an option. These courts require a bit more effort to maintain them. First, you must wet them with water and then rake them completely. The raking removes clumps and other large debris. It also starts the process of leveling the surface. This process will require different tools.

After you rake, you will then need to use a drag brush to help with leveling too. Dirt and other things that get stuck to the lines can be removed with a line scrub brush. The final step is to use a roller to compact the clay down. At this point, you have already removed any oddities and are now making the surface smooth.

You may also come across some grass courts. These courts will either be synthetic or natural. Most people try to avoid using natural grass because the care is quite involved. The courts must be reseeded often to prevent bald patches and keep the surface as even as possible. It is important to make sure there are not any dips in the grass.

Natural grass courts must be fertilized, watered, and mowed frequently. The height must be low and maintained. It will also be necessary to keep the grass free from pests and weeds. You will also need to redo all the lines after mowing because you will cut the lines down as well.

Synthetic courts, on the other hand, are a bit easier to take care of. They are usually resistant to weed and most pests. Additionally, they do not require cutting or watering as often and rarely need fertilizing. These courts are quickly replacing their natural counterparts.

Although proper tennis court maintenance is important, it is vital to learn about the type you have in order to care for it correctly. When you are properly educated, your efforts will be much easier. If you choose to pay for a service to provide the maintenance, you should know what they are doing to care for your surface and ensure they are doing it right.
