Separating Your Web Hosting From Your Web Designer

By C. Rodriguez

The average person looking to a website designed doesn't know the first thing about owning their own website. So when a web designer, who is very knowledgeable in this field offers a web design and hosting package, it sounds like a logical bundle of products to purchase. But having both your web designer also handle your hosting could be a recipe for disaster.

I can probably bet on the fact that your designer does not have a room full of servers at his or her home or office. There are exceptions to this rule, many large firms do have their own servers, but your average designer does not. Web designers are 9 times out of 10 the middleman. They are simply reselling you a part of their hosting package that is managed by a third party.

For the sake of this article, lets say you have already bundled your design and web hosting services together. You should look to get out of that deal as soon as possible! If any technical issues should arise on your site, you would need to contact your hosting company, whom at this moment is your designer. They, in turn must contact their hosting company, since they themselves do not host the server that your site resides on. They must wait for a reply, or action to be taken by the web hosting company before your website issues are resolved. All this can take several days, which can mean your site is down and losing potential business during the entire time. And we are not even taking into account that your designer may not be that prompt in dealing with these issues.

Then there is the issue of integrity. What happens if your designer/host stops paying their hosting bills? You are left with no access to your website, and wouldn't even be able to move it to a different server. Your website backups are probably kept by your host, who has now disappeared off the face of the earth (and if they stop paying for hosting, believe me they will fall off the face of the earth to you.)

There are many other situations that can happen to your website when it is hosted by your web designer instead of a hosting company. I have only touched on a few to make you aware of the scenarios that may happen if you decide to go this route.

You can avoid all of the issues listed above, simply by purchasing your own web hosting. Your costs will be lower than going with a middleman who is trying to make money by reselling services. You also have direct access to the company who has access to the servers your website is on, making technical issues very quick and easy to resolve. And most importantly, you can allow your designer to do what they were hired to do - create your website, and that is all. You can make your own updates or hire someone else to update the site and/or make enhancements without fear of offending your designer and having your site taken down.

Your company's online presence is very important. Before you get yourself in a bad situation where your site is left in the hands of someone else, do your research about reputable web hosting companies.
