How To Be Eligible For HUD Housing

By Charles Rogers

Not everyone is blessed with a decent abode that will keep him or her safe from harsh weather and criminals. The government founded the HUD housing project that is responsible for providing suitable houses for those citizens that are needy. The housing authority has built many houses that are supposed to be assigned to the elderly, the low-income earners and people with disabilities. To be eligible for this program, there are requirements set up by the officials. These conditions are set up to keep away those who would want to get free housing unlawfully.

The program is supposed to help the needy people, so the first thing that the officials need to know is the income you earn monthly or annually. The low earning group is defined as those individuals who do not surpass at least eighty percent of the median of revenue collected by families who live in a certain area. They are grouped into three stages which are low-income earners, the very low-income people, and the extremely low-income earners. You have to be among these groups to qualify for the program.

The privilege of getting these houses for free or at a very low cost is aimed at helping the low-income earners, people with disabilities and the old. Therefore, you have to present the department with your age, disability status, the number of people you live with and the marital status. This will help the authority to determine if you are eligible or not.

Citizenship is another critical thing that is considered by the housing department. This is because they cannot provide housing for non-citizens while there are very many citizens who have no proper shelters. You have to show an identification card to prove that you are a registered citizen and this goes to every member of the family. Children who have no identification cards should present their birth certificates.

Every citizen has documentation showing the social security digits. To be qualified for this application, you and all the family members you live with must provide the government with a social security number. The only people who might be exempted are children whose age is below six years, and you should have the proof that they have not been assigned the number before.

Some families have many children. If you have children that are above the age of eighteen, they will also be required by the authority to sign a consent form. The head of the family and the partner need to sign the forms regardless of their age. If you happen to be illiterate, the officials will guide you on how to fill the forms.

People who have criminal records are out of luck because they are not allowed to apply for this facilities no matter how needy they are. The department carries out a thorough criminal background check to ensure that you and the members of your family have clean records. The department liaise with the police, sex offenders registry, and the federal bureau of investigation to determine if you are clean or not.

For one to be eligible to apply for public housing, they must have unsettled consumer debt duties that surpass sixty percent of the money they earn monthly. The house head ought to be working and earning a minimum wage. The minimum hours they should work for is at least twenty hours weekly.
