Types Of Martial Arts Austin

At the moment, there are a number of techniques of combat in various parts of the world. They are called martial arts styles, with some being very traditional and others modern. All are however unique when one considers the way they teach fighting. Furthermore, there is considerable level of overlap among the various techniques. There are stand-up styles that teach individuals how to defend themselves whenever they are on their feet. These utilize kicks, blocks, punches, elbows and knees. The level to which these aspects are taught is dependent on the specific style and instructor. These techniques also teach other aspects of fighting. Among the striking styles are karate, kung fu, kickboxing and copoeira. Grappling styles focus on educating practitioners on ways to take opponents to the ground. They will achieve either dominant position or be able to utilize a submission hold in ending a fight.

Takedown or throwing styles can also be used. Normally, combat starts from a standing position. The surest way of getting a fight to the ground is by making use of throws and takedowns. Throwing styles will be essential in achieving this. All grappling styles also teach takedowns. As a result, there is a significant amount of overlap. Judo, hapkido and aikido are some throwing techniques.

Most of the mentioned styles use weapons within the systems. There also are martial arts techniques that use weapons as their main focus. These include among others kali and kendo. People who practice low impact styles are more concerned with techniques of breathing, fitness and the spiritual side of things. This is even if all these techniques were at one point used for combat.

It is for a fact that the majority of martial arts styles make use of techniques that are found in others. In the recent past, most schools have resorted to teaching the various styles as mixed martial arts. The hybrid styles allow for stand up fighting, grappling, throws and submissions. That aside, there are other hybrid techniques, including shoot-fighting and MMA.

Aikido is performed by flowing with the motion of the attacker and not opposing it head on. It is a grappling art that originated in Japan. It requires less physical strength because the practitioner directs the momentum of the attacker with entering and turning motions. This is followed by joint locks and throws.

Judo was created in Japan in 1882 and is relatively modern. Its aim is to either subdue opponents with grappling maneuvers or throw them onto the ground. The only moment that strikes and thrusts by use of hands are allowed is during pre-arranged times. These are however not permitted in free practice and competitions.

Hapkido originates from Korea and uses kicks, punches and joint locks. There is also the use of weapons like ropes, swords, canes and staff. However, their emphasis is varied. The focus of this technique is on using circular motions, footwork, body positioning and non-resisting movements to gain leverage. Hapkido and aikido are similar because of a common history but have different philosophies.
