Some Exciting Uses Of Agricultural Waste From Hogs

By Lianne Derocco

Hog waste is dirty, with foul odor, and is an annoyance to people, but is a part of hog farming that cannot be avoided. However, hog waste can also be of help to people in some ways. Hog waste can produce electricity, and there is a process to do this. Hog waste is contained and methane gas is produced in the process, and thus is used to power the generators that produce the electricity. Hog waste also can be used as fertilizers, and thus can give savings to farm producers.

The soil needs nutrients in order to produce excellent crops, and these nutrients are coming from the fertilizers created from liquefied hog waste. Easy application and likewise the efficient spreading of fertilizer on the soil are needed, and this is realized after the swine manure is composted and liquefied. Recycling the hog waste nutrients in an environmentally friendly process is the objective, and the eventual fertilizers produced are used in vegetable crops. Biologically breaking down the organic matters in the hog waste is done with composting the hog waste.

Swine waste also can be produced into synthetic crude oil, using a process that is currently scientifically studied. Currently, this is a scientific research project that is still in its infancy according to scientists, but is also very promising. Crude oil produced from the process could be a fuel source and also ease the problems of swine producers regarding their hog waste, which would benefit most of us.

The swine waste in the farms can also be used as binder for asphalt, which is used to make roads. While a petroleum binder can be used, the binders made from hog waste are much less expensive, so this is a big plus. These are more eco-friendly binding materials that can reduce the overall costs associated with the paving of our roads and highways.

Some mismanagement in the farms' waste systems can result in serious complications and this shows the importance of efficient hog waste management. A small leak in the lagoons can be a source of pollution to the groundwater, for example. Odors and flies also increase with improper waste management, such as allowing a heavy sludge layer to form on the bottom of the waste pit or lagoon. Top-level crusting and foaming are other common problems with which farmers must contend.

There is a natural agricultural waste product that helps hog producers reduce and solve these problems. This product is Agra Sphere or Lagoon Agra Sphere, and these use natural bacteria only that slowly eat away the solid waste formed. These are natural products that prevent sludge and crust formation and also eliminate foaming. Application of these products is easy because these are just tossed into the lagoons or waste pits and do not need mixing. These are also products that improve the nutrient value of the waste water.
