By Tiffany Gill

Building or buying a home one always has to look at what type of flooring would suit your lifestyle. If you don't intend having children and it will only be the two of you living in the home you can choose pretty much any type of floor. Having a young family with toddlers running amuck through the house changes perspective dramatically but should not put you off choosing hand scraped hardwood flooring.

In really cold climates, even though there is central heating you may prefer using wall to wall carpets in the bedrooms. They do take a bit more cleaning but if they are vacuumed a couple of times a week and washed when needed, they will keep their color and last a long time. Some type of heating in the bedrooms would be necessary in very cold countries.

There are some truly magnificent homes to be seen with some exquisite examples. The reason it has been used over time is because of its durability and appearance. A lot of hard work goes into hand-scraping it requires muscle and elbow grease. Determination and lots of patience is needed to see it through.

There is so much than can be done to make improvements in a home. Just changing the tiles in the bathroom or the kitchen can give it a real lift and make it look as though the whole room has been renovated. Doing minor changes here and there as the budget allows can all make a big difference in the home.

One other popular choice home owners make are laminated floors. It is fitted together in a similar way to tongue and groove. It is plastic bonded and looks like wood. There are various types of laminate made to look like oak, mahogany or teak. This type is also relatively hard-wearing, easy to clean, soft on the feet and does not need to be polished. Simply going over it with a damp mop and clean water will be enough to make the floor look shiny and new. It is warmer in cooler weather than tiles would be and if properly installed will last for years.

When choosing the floor for any area of the home, there are a few things you need to think about. One of the most important would be your budget. If you are on a limited budget, don't consider granite, solid hardwood or engineered wood as these can be extremely costly. Location is another aspect you will have to look into, whether it will be in a wet, dry or semi wet area. This can all affect the type of flooring you choose for different rooms and making the right choice can save you a lot of money in the long term.

There are other options available and many people think the easiest to keep clean would be tiling. There are many benefits of using tiles with youngsters in the house but it can be very cold in winter. If you do choose tiling then having under floor heating to keep little feet warm and cozy would give you the best of both worlds.

Should you ever change the hand scraped hardwood flooring in your home you will have to think about whether to install the same type throughout the house. This will create a flowing effect in the home. Should you wish to create living areas, you can find attractive rugs to place strategically throughout the home. It is always nice to be able to have ones feet on a thick rug when sitting watching television.
