The island has an interesting history as well. The information driven geeks will appreciate its stories. It was one of many Spanish colonies during prehistoric times. Slavery was also involved but was subsequently abolished and is now celebrated as a public holiday called Emancipation Day.

Wanting to visit for a short period of time, or wishing to actually reside in the island, is a both a good idea. It would give you peace and serenity for vacations. For sustainability, it can also offer simple forms of livelihood if one wishes to live there permanently.
