Information About Unmanned Surface Vessel Manufacturers

By Shirley Stevens

Unmanned surface vessel (USV) is also referred to by the name autonomous surface vessel (ASV). A USV is a floating type of platform that allows for operation without human presence on board. The idea of unmanned vessels started during the Second World War and researchers started working on it immediately after the war. The advancement of this idea has gone hand-in-hand with developments in technology and the needs of users. Here is information regarding unmanned surface vessel manufacturers.

USVs have not only been used in the field of science but also in the military. People nowadays are allowed ownership of USVs and there are no requirements that are set for ownership. This vessels help in carrying out various research and scientific operations. More safety and comfort to users are offered by modern vessels and they are also multi-functional.

These vessels have made it possible for water bodies to be explored with 100 percent safety levels. An ASV can be used to explore water bodies that can prove risky for humans or animals to explore. Rest is not needed for these vessels since they are machines and they also cannot turn down a job unlike human beings.

Even though they were initially developed for military operations, their use has become more scientific over the years. Most models are built to be versatile in their marine operations. The manner in which waters are exploited has been revolutionized by the introduction of USVs. One of the major operations in which these vessels are used is in oceanographic measurements.

Operations that are comprised in the oceanographic measurements include, ship wreck survey, chemistry, earthquake prediction, bathymetry, hydrographic data, monitoring water, measurement of salinity, and structure inspection. Air and atmospheric measurement operations are done by the use of USVs also. Measurements in this field include measurement of humidity, sea surface temperature, and surface winds. Before hurricanes happen, this vessels can be used to predict them accurately.

A USV can also be used to carryout weather forecasting assignments under water. USVs are being used by a number of militaries throughout the world to carryout weather forecasting and a number of other applications. In military applications they are mainly used for mine- hunting, survey, military training and security, coastal surveillance and mine detection. There are cases where USVs are used to accompany underwater vessels such as submarines in order to provide backup communications, navigation and exact location of the vessel.

A lot of improvements are continuously being done in these vessels. Manufacturers are trying to add as many features into these vessels as possible to make them more functional. Major developments are being done in the shape of the hulls to improve efficiency and safety of people onboard.

The SWATH concept has come up strongly and helped vessels that need static behavior and speed while at the sea. Vessels are being made more capable and stable to be able to survive harsh conditions in water by the concept of SWATH. Militaries and researchers also have improved capability to do their work because of SWATH. Better models of these vessels are expected to be developed in the future.
