By Carol Howard

attending to the needs of an elderly family member on a daily basis can be physically and mentally challenging. Therefore, it is essential to seek help from someone else and have time for yourself. Senior care services involve taking the responsibility of the primary overseer temporarily so that they can get a chance to relax and look after their business. It is also provided in case an emergency arises, and there is no one to take over the duties. They are various types of recess attention meant to meet different needs.

The most common type of aid is in-home assistance. Just like the name suggests, this service is provided at home in the absence of primary caretaker. It can be provided by another family member, friend or neighbor while you relax for some days or hours. In a case where your relative requires specialized attention, an appropriate professional can take your place. Usually, the temporary carer also takes over some daily chores such as cooking, bathing, and walking.

There is also center-based day service. It involves taking your relative to daybreak so that they can socialize, have fun and participate in various activities. Besides, the initial caretaker gets a chance to relax and socialize with other people, thus creating a sense of independence for some hours. There are institutions that can accommodate all types of people including those with special needs.

Another common type of interval management is a consumer-directed respite. Just like in-home assistance, it involves inviting a friend, neighbor or another family member to attend to your relative but in this case involving one who requires special attention. However, the temporary carer has to go for training before assuming the responsibility.

There is also host family model. This type of respite is usually provided in the custodial home. This can be anyone ranging from certified foster personnel, or the home of a person working in the related program. This kind of break enables the individual who needs the service to receive it in a more familiar setting. However, home used for this purpose should be licensed and follow regulations similar to those of a foster institution.

There is also adult day centers. It is mostly attended by older people who can longer manage themselves or are isolated and lonely. The center staffs provide them with a range of services such as meals, educational activities, games, etc. Also, the primary caregiver can execute other tasks during the day.

Community-access recess is another model that majorly focuses on both the person who need care and one providing it. It is most commonly done in a group setting where both of them get the chance to interact with other people. Its principal aim is to break the monotony and create a sense of independence.

Lastly, there is the residential category. This includes taking your loved one to a home for seniors for some few days or weeks. This is mostly done when the primary custodian wants to attend an event such as a wedding or want to go for a holiday. It can also be done in case an emergency situation arises such as the staff falling sick.
