The Kids Self Defense Classes Fayetteville GA Instructors Offer Aren't All About Fighting

By Gary Cox

Today's world can be a dangerous place for youngsters. The news seems to be filled with stories of missing or abducted children. Parents are often frightened to let their youngsters walk to school in the morning and remain anxious until they get home in the afternoon. Many parents are resorting to the kids self defense classes Fayetteville GA instructors offer as a way of giving their children the tools they need if they ever face an aggressor.

Some parents may have initial misgiving about their children taking a self defense class. They assume that the emphasis will be on the best ways to fight off an attacker. This is not the case however. These programs teach children that confronting someone directly with fists or feet is the last resort. Instead the instructors tell youngsters to use their heads and trust their instincts. If they can run away, that's what they should do.

Instructors also emphasize the importance of deescalating a situation if at all possible. They often give the example of a burglary attempt. The teachers instruct students, who are faced with an aggressor demanding their backpack, shoes, lunch, or money to hand it over without any argument. Trying to argue their way out of this kind of situation can end badly. Walking away without injury is the best outcome.

Instructors also teach children how they can reduce the risk of getting into a bad situation in the first place. They tell them to always be aware of their surroundings. Staying in areas that are open, well lit, and where other people are walking or playing is safer than frequenting places where there are stairwells, bushes, doorways, and other places where people can hide.

Older children, who might be out after dark, are advised to always walk in groups. It might not seem cool, but letting at least one adult know where they are and when they'll be back is extremely important for their safety. A cell phone can make all the difference when it comes to child safety. Instructors tell students that it's great to enjoy a party, but if kids are doing things they shouldn't be doing, leaving immediately or calling someone to come and get them is the smartest choice.

Children sometimes have to ride public transportation. Instructors suggest that they choose seats as close to the driver as possible. Staying alert and taking note of the people around them is a good idea. Going to sleep or listening to music with headphones or plugs is not a good idea. Wherever they are going, children need to walk with confidence and a sense of purpose. They should look like they know exactly where they are going.

There are portions of these classes that are directed toward the most effective ways to physically defend themselves. Instructors teach moves that require knowledge and skill more than physical strength. These instructions also instill discipline and self confidence in young students.

Parents will always worry about their children. It is just human nature. Empowering them with information and teaching them skills to implement it, will help keep kids from becoming a statistic.
