By Claire Dowell

Divorce or separation is the solution preferred by many married couples if their relationship is no longer working. The number of divorce in Indiana is increasing and because of this, access to the records is becoming a little difficult for many. This is the reason why the divorce records of Indiana is opened to the public. The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has made it possible to easily access the documents.

There are several reasons why the residents of Indiana request for a copy of a divorce record. One is for genealogy research. The document has information that is necessary in updating one's family tree. IT may cause problems for the future generation if the divorce is not stated on the family records. Another use of this document is for government transactions. There are a number of transactions in government offices that would call for a copy of a divorce certificate. This includes the insurance matters and other financial related transactions. There are also some who would use this document as reference when they check on the marital status of an individual. This is mostly done by individuals who are planning to get married.

A public divorce certificate in the state of Indiana contains limited information about the separation. One can find only the basic details about the divorce such as the place and the date where the separation was filed. Further details about the separation are kept private since the state respects the privacy of its people. Details about the agreement about the children's custody are not indicated on the public document. The division of the couple's properties is also kept confidential.

In Indiana, the office of the Vital Records Section of the Department of Health does not release certified copies of such documents. In order to get a copy of a divorce record, one may need to visit the county where the divorce was granted. If one does not know where to go, the state office can help verify this information for a certain fee. A separate processing fee has to be paid when doing the actual search of the document at the county. Residents of Indiana can only request for their personal divorce records. If one needs to access the files of other people, a special permit is needed to proceed.

Aside from personal requesting it at the county or the state office, one can also send a mail request. The mail request has to be sent to the county office where the separation was registered. One can send a mail to the Vital Records Section to request for the details as to where the divorce was filed. Sending a mail request is not the fastest method there is since it can take days before the results are delivered. Waiting can be avoided if the search is done online.

With the development of the Internet, retrieval of marriage and divorce records in the state of Indiana is faster and convenient. The document can be obtained in a breeze, unlike requesting it personally in the county office. The results of the search are displayed almost instantly making it convenient for most of the residents of the state.
