Correcting Problems With Public Education

By Patty Goff

Many people now have come to believe that there is no room left for more development in the public schooling system. This is because there are very many challenges that face this system that seem not to be changing any time soon. Taking this system to the new direction is not as easy as it sounds when the government says it. Whether it is the students, the parents or the teachers, everyone is affected by the problems with public education.

Every government school on this planet is affected by some of the challenges that are going to be mentioned in this article. For instance, there are very many schools that have small classrooms. The proportion of students who attend these schools is very big compared to the facilities that the government have made available. When the ratio of the teacher to the students is too high, it will be hard for the teacher to make sure all the students have comprehended what they teach.

Another issue that has affected this system for a long time is poverty. There are some reports that say that in America, 22% of the students live in or under the poverty level. This level is defined by a family that uses less than 23,000 dollars annually. The biggest number of school dropouts can be linked to poverty in a way since these students do not even get enough food and sleep.

When a child is stressed, it can be difficult for them to make use of their potential in terms of their education. Some scholars are usually affected by too much poverty that they choose to find part time occupations to help upkeep their families. Working when a child is required to be learning can impact the grades tremendously. This is so they do not get enough time to study or even just do their homework.

The family factors also have a great effect on the learning of a student. Every teacher can confirm that the ability of a student to learn is greatly affected by what is going on at home. Things such as domestic violence, divorce and extreme poverty can affect the school attendance rate of the affected student. Absenteeism will definitely make the student get low grades.

Technology has become a great part of our lives and it is therefore essential in the current learning system. There are very many students who are advanced technologically compared to their teachers. It is therefore only right if the teachers work hard to be more advanced than the children but the government schools lack the facilities that can make this possible.

Bullying is not a new problem in the education systems and it should be taken very seriously. Most cases of bullying just take place in the government schools and they greatly affect the education of the bullied students. Technology has even made this problem worse because there is the new avenue of cyber bullying. There are very many suicides that can be traced back to cyber bullying.

Funds are the most important things that can help in the improvement of any facilities. The public schooling system however lacks this and this has made this system to lag behind for a very long time. When there are no funds it means that there will be no enough money to pay adequate teachers and other support staff hence the management will be harder.
