What You Need To Know About Commercial Fire Systems

By Mark Mahaffey

When you think of fire safety, you may think first of home fire safety. However, workplace safety is also very important. These days, it is not uncommon for people to spend nearly as much of their time at work as they do at home! Therefore, fire safety at work is very important.

As you begin pulling together the different pieces of your commercial fire security plan, there are some various aspects that you should think about. For instance, in your office, make sure that all employees are aware of what the fire escape route is and how to navigate it. In addition, your building must have at least two exit doors.

Anytime there are people inside your building, it is imperative that the fire doors remain unblocked. There should not be boxes, furniture or trash in the doorway. This makes sense, because in a fire, anything in front of those doors will slow down the exit process. Also make sure these doors have clearly marked exit signs near them.

Do you have fire extinguishers in your building? If not, you should purchase some and make sure that everyone in your office knows how to use them. Check them frequently to make sure they are in good operating condition.

Sprinkler systems are also great for containing a fire that has already started. This can keep the fire small until the fire emergency workers arrive. A quality commercial fire system in your business should include automatic sprinklers in every room. You can connect these to your main security system, so that they come on automatically if a fire breaks out.

And of course, you must have smoke and heat detectors in your business. Keep new batteries in them and check the wiring often, so that they will perform as expected in the event of a fire. There are a lot of fires that could have been avoided if the smoke detectors had been properly maintained and functioning.
