From Art To Karate: After School Fun In Carlsbad

By Leigh Metopher

When the school bell rings and children are free for the afternoon, it's fun to plan at least one weekly after-school activity for your child. For parents in Carlsbad and Encinitas, there are many enrichment options to consider, from art classes to martial arts training. Here are a few choices that your child might enjoy.

One great option is to consider signing your child up for Karate lessons. Martial arts is a fabulous option for those kids who don't wish to participate on a baseball team or soccer team because it provides physical activity and improves coordination and strength. Not only is Karate an excellent source of exercise, this martial art improves concentration, self-control and self-discipline. In addition, Karate is a valuable skill to attain because it provides children with a means of self-defense and increases their level of self confidence.

For those seeking karate in Carlsbad, karate in San Marcos or martial arts in Encinitas, consider signing up for classes at Team Mai. This karate school offers classes for children, teens and adults at all levels. They also host fun night events and summer camps for children, and the instructors host after-school programs at eight Carlsbad elementary schools, one San Marcos elementary and at Carlsbad Country Day Preschool. Team Mai even offers a free two-week trial for prospective students.

Most cities have a recreation department that offers a good selection of affordable classes and Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Marcos are no exception. Carlsbad, for example, hosts art classes that focus on painting, drawing or perhaps ceramics. They also offer dance classes and training for a variety of sports. There are plenty of options, so whether your child loves acting, crafts or science, there is something for everyone.

For children who dream of taking to the stage, there are many fun choices in North San Diego County. You can enjoy musical theater experiences, acting classes, playwriting workshops, improvisation classes and performing arts camps at several local venues, including Prodigy Kids Performing Arts, Kids Act or the North County School of the Arts, and these are just a few businesses that cater to kids and teens who want to sing or act.

Mad Science of San Diego also offers after-school classes at four schools in Carlsbad, four schools in Encinitas and one elementary school in San Marcos. These are fun, hands-on classes where kids get to enjoy exciting science lessons and experiments. There are also several companies that offer after-school Lego building workshops and classes for elementary-aged children, and many are held at local schools.
