By Neil Lcb Feather

Modern beer festival celebrations are products of the distant past. In fact, this brewed beverage was drunk and enjoyed in ancient times. Today, you can find one of these events in all parts of the planet, and if you are lucky enough to attend, you may have an unforgettable experience.

Almost everyone has heard of Oktoberfest. This event has its home in Munich and covers 16 days from late September to early October. Oktoberfest is considered to be the original home of the modern day beer festival.

The first Oktoberfest occurred in the year 1810 in October. The celebration was centred around the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to his princess Theresa. Everyone who lived in Munich was invited to attend. One of the event highlights was horse racing that greatly impressed the Royal Family. This was the main reason that the tradition was carried out and Oktoberfest was born. Since then, it has occurred annually except during the war years and and epidemic outbreaks.

In Britain, the GBBF or Great British Beer Festival is a hugely popular event among brew aficionados. Dubbed as the biggest pub in the world, you will find an astounding 800 different types of beer. The event showcases the best of British independent brewers as well as great beer from around the word. One thousand volunteers donate their time to staff this week long event that starts in early August.

The GBBF is supported by the organization known as the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) which promotes cask conditioned ale and supports independent breweries. The Great British Beer Festival began in the mid 70s and the first event attracted more than 40,000 guests with 150,000 pints of ale consumed. The beer festival is the UK'S largest and normally held annually in London.
