Living Room Design - Seven Keys To Success

By Vickie Daeley

Designing the perfect living room for your family doesn't have to be a traumatic affair if you are aware of seven keys that will lead you in the right direction. Whether transforming an apartment or a space that is home to several family members, you will easily make the transformation you desire when you keep in mind several major points.

How is your living room going to be used? TV viewing? A multi-purpose space? Make this decision before proceeding further with your design.

The focal point is going to be the first thing you need to recognize. It can be a wonderful fireplace, a window with a view of a misty wood or colorful flowers growing in your garden, or even a magnificent TV cabinet combination with added shelf units for displaying books and mementos.

Before purchasing furniture, make sure that the pieces you choose will complement the scale of the room. If your ceilings are arched or high, larger but fewer pieces of furniture may be a good option.

How the room flows is paramount to your living room design. Measure every item of furniture and produce a scale chart. With this simple device, you can ensure that each piece will fit properly and the flow of traffic will be unhindered.

Neutral colors on the walls are a good background choice for most families. But if you want to express an outgoing personality or just feel great in yellows, reds or oranges, by all means, find the perfect bright and load your walls with color. If your schedule is hectic and you desire peace and quiet but don't want a neutral, consider the softer, muted blues, greens, grays and browns for your wall color choice.

Don't forget that floors and ceilings are also important elements of your room. Whether you choose carpeting, tile or wood, they should be an integral part of your design. Consider painting the ceiling a color other than pure white. If you have beautiful wood trim around your ceiling, consider a color that will complement your walls.

Variety is said to be the spice of life and mixing fabric patterns can certainly bring a lively atmosphere into your living room Coordinating florals, stripes, prints and plaids can be an invigorating and interesting way to spice up your space. But soothing solids are a good option if you require a calm and sophisticated tone in your living room.

Accessories are the final touch in any living room. Choose something that you have been collecting for a long time such as books or "objets d'arte" or just something that you absolutely love. This will complete your room and add a feeling of grace, charm and warmth.
