6 Ways To Handle Raw Emotions

By Stephanie Cole

When rage erupts, the impact can only be equated to that of a volcano. Such emotional outbursts are likely to cause fractures in relationships that have taken decades to build. Raw emotions may also cause the culprit to damage properties and eventually face legal suits over issues that would have been resolved better. Everyone must learn when to be emotional and how to take control of such situations.

Take a deep breath. This is a perfect technique that can be used to deal with any situation on the spot. It works when you are overwhelmed by anger and feel like doing something destructive. Even a normal breath will work to avoid attracting unnecessary attention. Your mental focus should be on the breathing and not the situation at hand. This gives you time to cool tempers and make a better judgment of your next action.

See the world from the eyes of your opponent. This is anchored on the principle that human beings are inherently good. Only a very small percentage of strangers would harm you driven by malice. Be empathetic and known that the reaction would have been different if the circumstances were different. By giving other people the benefit of doubt, you can objectively assess the situation and act appropriately.

Leave the area where the situation is happening in order to take a break. This is especially important where the burst of rage is triggered by accumulated anger. Take a few days off or walk away from the office into an aerated and lit environment. It helps to be in a place with natural vegetation or an open horizon. This helps you to regain your cool and find the best solution.

Take control of your mind. Emotional outbursts are usually at the stroke of a moment. They happen at the moments of extreme stress and anxiety. It means that your mind is being controlled by anger, resentment and imaginary conclusions. Take hold of the moments and do not allow your thoughts to be influenced by emotions. It takes time and practice to manage to control your emotions when pushed to the corner.

Seek peace constantly. This requires deep reflections and a conscious decision to be a peaceful person. It is only when you are calm and collected that your decisions will be meaningful. Constantly meditate on positive ideas to build a calm spirit. You should also employ calming music or breathing techniques depending on your situation and resources. Once you are internally calm, you can treat other people better and react without anger.

Keep a diary of your feelings and express them often. This is an important step in self-awareness because it helps you to take responsibility for the actions you take when you get emotional. By expressing these feelings, the built-up anger will reduce. Failure to express your feelings could lead to an outburst in future.

You are unique in your reaction to different scenarios. Know what triggers you to become emotional and try to avoid it. Bear in mind that any reaction that could be harmful will result in losses on your end through broken relationships and damaged properties. Practice to control your reactions and you will never have to deal with the negative consequences of rage.
