How To Increase Shower Stream Pressure

By John Lewis

Low water stream pressure is a common issue. Many may not realize why the water output has decreased. If the shower stream has become slack the following may help get the pressure back to where it used to be.

First, it is helpful to understand why the stream is slack. Water pressure is affected by several factors. Some choose to call their city's water works. They'll send a worker out to your home to look at your system and find the cause of the issue. Without treating the cause, it may be impossible to get the strong flow to return. Read on to discover possible reasons for a reduced stream.

Shower Head: The head or extension may be causing the problems. If it has not been changed recently, there may be build up or debris blocking the flow. This is usually easy to fix and shouldn't require a large time commitment.

Remedy - To fix the small valve, you would need to open the extension and locate the valve. Once located, you would widen the hole to improve pressure. If however, the issues is caused by build up, you would need to either clean it or purchase a new one. You can often clean it by placing in a vinegar solution and scrubbing. This should remove any debris obstructing the water flow.

The Pipes: In some cases the pipes may be causing reduced water flow. This may be either due to debris in the pipes or incorrect sizing. Both of these would present as a reduced flow of water. This takes a longer period to solve and often is the most expensive issue to have solved.

The fix- To remedy reduced pressure in galvanized pipes it is necessary that the pipes be replaced. It is recommended to upgrade steel pipes for copper or plastic. Once done, you should notice an increase in the flow. If the pipes are the incorrect size, then you would need to pay a professional to replace them with the appropriate sizes.

If the above doesn't lead to a solution then you should check to see if your setup has a valve on the inlet piping. Some houses have valves on the supply line which can be manipulated to increase or decrease water pressure. These control the water stream inside the building. This valve may need to be adjusted slightly. To adjust this valve, you would need to loosen the lug nut and then turn the screw. Turn the lug nut clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease the water pressure. Once wanted stream is achieved, re-tighten the nut.

A proper water pressure makes bathing so much more enjoyable for many. The fixes above should be performed only if you feel skilled enough to do them yourself. Otherwise, please contact a professional in your local area. They'll schedule a time to come out and test your system and apply the appropriate technique to remedy the issue. When shopping around make sure to get quotes from several suppliers. Ask family and friends for recommendations if you have trouble locating a trustworthy individual.
