Better House Ventilation With Louver Vents

By Cynthia Peterson

Louvers can be compared to jalousies in which it consist of horizontal slats which are diagonally positioned for air and light passage. Keeping the house out from noise, rain, and direct heat of sunlight are most common use of these. But the difference between louvers and jalousies is that jalousies have handles that enables the slats to be adjusted, while slats in louvers are fixed.

Old louvers are usually made out from barrel. And through the years, it has evolved into more designs which are more like modern louver vents. An example for this are window blinds, which is made up of slats that can be opened and closed by pulling a string.

One very popular louver which is made and used in history is the gable vent. Gable and screened vents and are mostly used in house attics and comes with different shapes, sizes, and materials. They offer a certain amount ventilation at the top most part of the attic but it does not produce equal ventilation in some areas.

Other types of venting the attic includes soffit venting and ridge venting. Soffit venting is a type of venting that allows air to pass from under the roof. This also helps reduce in moisture inside the attic. Another type is the ridge venting which is placed at the very top of an inclined roof which allows humid air to escape from the attic.

Modernized vents are made of wood, glass, aluminum, and metal. Most of these can be opened and closed by pulling a string or by the use of modern operators. Architectural buildings are also using vents to add more effects. Different louvers and designs of a vent are mostly placed in the facades of the buildings.

During typhoons and floods, louvers can also help in making less damage, especially to the walls of its structure. It is because it serves as an opening for the flood. And thus, it controls and balances the pressure from the inside, and so reducing the possibility of breaking the walls.

These are also very common in industries like factories and power plants. Because it provides natural ventilation by controlling the temperature. Workers have a hard time working in this kind of environment since it is very challenging to work in hot areas especially in summer season. So if the temperature outside is high, the temperature inside will be high as well. Natural ventilation is already used by many industries today.

These are also used in transportation. This is most commonly used for transportation of animals. Providing a fresh air for animals in a vehicle is a common problem. Animals like horses are usually being transported to different places for racing, but most vehicles before does not have proper air pass and causing them to get exhausted to harmful release of gases such as carbon monoxide from the vehicle.

Since the crisis of global warming is increasing nowadays, the climate in most houses, buildings, and other infrastructures also changes. Installation of vents are very much important for constant temperature control and insulation. This would be best because of temperature and weather swings and more importantly, for good and proper ventilation.
