What Your Design Plan Will Include

By Vickie Daeley

When you hire a professional interior designer, they will create a custom design plan that will include many different details. Many designers offer different levels of design plans based on client needs and budgets. Generally, a client will find the following items in a custom decorating plan.

After you meet with your designer and he or she takes measurements of the space, the work truly begins. The designer will combine all of the elements into a CAD space plan, which is generated using a special computer program. The plan will be digital image of the finished project, which is a great way for you to truly "see" what the design will look like upon completion.

In addition to the CAD plan, your designer will carefully select fabric swatches and colors for your walls, windows and furnishings. Complementing fabrics will be used for drapes, curtains and other window treatments, as well as coverings for furniture, pillows, beds and more, depending on what room you are redesigning. Paint colors and painting techniques also will be included, as well as wallpaper if you wish to use it.

Furniture ideas are another big part of the overall design plan. This includes not only the type and style of furnishings for your room, but also the ideal placement in the room. It might also include any suggestions for built-in cabinets and bookshelves. There also might be suggestions for special accent items, such as artwork, clocks or decorations. You also might be including items such as televisions or perhaps a piano.

Color, furnishings and room arrangements are all important elements, and during the day, your room might look absolutely perfect. However as the daylight fades, you need artificial light to create a warm glow in your new room. So your designer will definitely dedicate part of your design plan to provide the ideal lighting scheme. This includes your overhead lights and the angles at which they are placed, as well as adding dimming functions. In addition, you might include accent lighting and task lighting in certain areas.

You can have your designer not only design your space, but create a list of where to purchase all of your furnishings, paint, wallpaper, etc. This can be a great idea because designers typically have a large file of good contacts and can find low prices on just about every good or service you might need.
