Things To Know About Credit Repair Companies

By Joshua Cooper

In cases, where individuals have defaulted on car payments or mortgages and have experienced repossession or foreclosure, credit ratings are often at the lowest level. While this is the case, there are often credit repair companies whom suggest that ratings can be repaired. While true, most often an individual can complete the same steps these companies take to repair and upgrade credit scores.

To understand how these companies work, one must first understand the definition of repair. Technically, when fixing a report, one must disrupt errors by filing a written dispute. In most cases, individuals can then deny these conflicts either online or through snail mail.

As a result, sometimes the only way a score can be raised is by removing any errors, falsehoods or multiple listings. While this is the case, in order to do so, individuals must often submit proof that the negative marks were created in error and not in relation to default on a loan or payment of a bill. After which, the agency will review the information and decide whether or not an adjustment can be made.

It is at this point when many individuals hire a company to dispute errors on a report. In most cases, these services charge a fee. As such, these companies are often the most useful in cases of identity theft, or when there are multiple errors on a report.

In most cases, the company represents an individual when needing to improve ratings so that one can obtain a lease, car loan, home or unsecured loan. While this is the case, it should be noted that clean up can often take a long time. In some cases, this can be weeks. Whereas, when there are multiple errors, it can often take months or years.

The fees are often much higher for removing issues related to identity theft. For, not only will the company work to remove errors resulting from criminal activity, most often the authorities are involved. As such, this can slow down the process, resulting in more time and work on behalf of the reporting agency.

If there are items on a report which do not match past purchases, or appear to be in error, it is important to contact the merchant and card company immediately. For, either of these entities can often be of assistance in getting negative marks which are in error removed from a report. Whereas, if there are negative marks related to items which have been paid off, it is important to contact the company and repair company to have the situation resolved, then removed from the report.

Individuals can now run a basic free credit report on many websites. Whereas, most can also request a free report once a year from different reporting agencies. When this is the case, it is often best to obtain a full agency report. For, while free reports provide a great deal of information, it can often be easier to identify creditors, debt, payment and contact information on an official report.
