Basic Details Regarding MRI Screening

By Sharon Peterson

Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI uses radio wave energy pulses and magnetic field to create images of organs and structures in the body. This can show problems that other imaging methods may not be able to show. The body is placed on a movable bed and is inserted to the tube scanner that have a circular magnet in it.

Before undergoing this procedure, patients must first be tested and checked before having them scanned by it. There is an MRI screening Los Angeles that they must pass by removing all metal devices and objects on them. Here are the basic details regarding this procedure you need to know before having one in Los Angeles, CA.

These scans are being used to check abnormalities that can be found in the brain and spinal cord and other parts such as tumors, cysts and joint injuries. Detecting problems the internal organs like liver and heart may have is possible too. Women having pelvic region problems can undergo this to detect the cause of it.

You will be inside the scanner wearing earplugs to reduce the noise made by the machine and the doctor will talk to you, making sure that you are ready and comfortable. It is important to stay still and maintain your position so that the images will not become blurry. The procedure could be stopped if you request them due to being uncomfortable inside.

After it is done, the radiologist will check the images and determine if further scanning should be done. If he is satisfied and determines that no more further images are needed then they will let you go home. He will then make a report and passed it on to your doctor to discuss with you the results in an appointed date.

The procedure usually takes twenty until sixty minutes depending on the part of your body the pictures will be taken and how many are needed. Having braces and fillings may cause distortion to the images being taken. This would result in making the process to take longer in finishing.

Because moving is not allowed during the procedure inside the scanner so a short break is sometimes given to you by the doctor during long scanning time. There is no need for claustrophobic patients to worry because they will talk to you while inside making sure you are comfortable during the process. Open MRI scanners are also available in some places for claustrophobic patients.

There are no side effects known to pregnant women and to the child inside them that undergoes the procedure. Undergoing it on her first trimester is not recommended although it can be done if absolutely necessary to get the information needed. It is advisable to do it during the second trimester and third trimester although doing it in the first one have no clinical concerns known.

There are no known side effects to those who have undergone this. Just be careful to remove any metal devices on and in you to avoid injury. The contrast material injected to have clearer image may cause allergies but is easily treatable.
