The Impact Of Fitting Chimney Caps In The Living Places

By Stella Gay

Housing designs should be developed in such a way that allows protection of the entire house and the occupants from any damage. In reality there are some factors that contribute to the decline in value of the living places and exposes the occupants to some potential risks. Ventilation channels have been designed to connect the fire places and the kitchen sections to the outside in order to enable escape of the smoke generated in this sections. There has been need to protect these channels making the use of chimney caps very useful.

The chimney section of a house is usually hollow and joins downwards to the fireplace. Leaving this vent uncovered or completely open causes rain water to enter into the fireplace and can spread in the entire floor within the room. This entries may also be used by birds and other animals to enter into the house and this has adverse damages on the ceiling. In case of strong winds, the wind is able to force the smoke coming from the fire point downwards and it fills the room.

The presence of such risks have propagated the invention of mechanisms that can be put in place to reduce the impact. Architects and designers have come up with different dimensions of covers that can be used suitably to cover up this entries. Their installation plays a major role in promoting security of such vents.

During the caps purchase, a consideration should be made on the size of lid to be bought. The diameter for the pipe must be measured and this enables selection of the lid that correctly fits the intended part. They should have a large section of perforated parts that will enables passage of smoke while the upper part should be complete cover made of steel.

Steel is the most used material to make the covers. This is because it has high ability to withstand rusting. Smoke is acidic and has been found to accelerate rusting of many metals. In order to increase the lifespan of this steel, it should be galvanized. Other materials than have been recommended are asbestos and concrete.

Chimney covers are affordable. It is recommendable to visits a number of hardware and view the catalogues so that a purchase can be made from the sellers who offer low prices. The installation cost is also low and affordable depending on the experts hired.

Installation procedures on the lids are different depending on the type of cover being used. Some only require to be inserted into the vent and they hold perfectly. This makes removal for cleaning of this vent possible over time. Others may require use of adhesive or cement to make them stay in the desired positions.

Positive results have come along with the increased use of these caps. There has been reduction on rain water finding its way into the house. Incidences of smoke coming back to the room have declined tremendously. Anyone suffering from bad chimneys should try this method.
